Kaleb P. and Devin S. started their tennis journey in 2021 when they enrolled in the Sports & Fitness NJTL Virtual Tennis Training led by Coach Tom Sullivan, who was a coach at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Coach Tom’s passion for the game sparked a love for tennis in both boys, laying the foundation for their future success.
Later that same year, Kaleb attended his first NJTL Leadership Camp in Columbus, MS, hosted by Golden Triangle, where he met Coach Lance Hickman. It was during this camp that Kaleb had the chance to practice backhand drills with Coach Lance and interact with other young players from different states. It became clear to Kaleb that his knowledge of tennis was just beginning, and this realization fueled his determination to improve.
In July 2023, Coach Lance took both Kaleb and Devin under his mentorship, making a personal commitment to teach them not only how to play tennis but also how to coach other young players. This marked the beginning of the Pay It Forward Mentoring Initiative, which continues to thrive in 2024.
Thanks to Coach Lance’s dedication and the unwavering support of their grandmother, Margaret Townsend, Kaleb and Devin have developed exceptional tennis and leadership skills. Both boys have grown into youth tennis coaches, leading by example and inspiring the next generation of players.
The Pay It Forward Mentoring Initiative is a shining example of how mentorship and community can transform lives. Beyond tennis, Kaleb and Devin are developing essential life skills such as leadership, teamwork, and responsibility, which are making a significant difference in their personal growth. These skills are helping them build confidence both on and off the court, preparing them for future success in all areas of life. We are excited to see where Kaleb and Devin’s journey takes them next as they continue to pay it forward and inspire others.
